WGC District Night Exercise 2001
On the night of 1st December, 7 of the Senior Scouts took part in the
Welwyn Garden City District Night Exercise. This was the first year that
we had entered an unaccompanied team, and here are the impressions of one
of them.
We arrived at Welwyn Garden City an hour early so we were able to lay out our
kit, and the leaders gave us all a reflective coat. Someone asked if we had our
permission slips. Then we were taken in the minibus to Stanborough Lakes and we
all had to give our permission slips to the organisers of the hike. As usual I
did not have my permission slip but it turned up in the end and we left for the
hike.
We walked from Stanborough Lakes for about a mile to reach our first base. The
first base was measuring and weighing different objects eg brick, peg, rope,
cone.
We walked about another 2 miles, almost getting run over by a landrover, to get
to the second base. At this base we had to identify different substances by
smelling them.
We walked quite a bit to the next base. I must have been tired because I cannot
remember what we did there.
We walked to the next base but we must have gone wrong because we came from the
wrong direction. Here we had to identify different badges.
We had a long walk to the last base where we met the 10th Harpenden leaders. We
had to move a warhead to a different place with weird rules.
We got back to Stanborough Lakes at about 12.00 o'clock and the leaders took us
back to the scout hut where we were sleeping. That night was very very good.
It was well below freezing all night, so conditions weren't the easiest. The
team completed the course in the fastest time - unfortunately they didn't score
any extra points for this, but they still came third in the Unaccompanied
Visitors competition.
