Incident Hike, March 2002
The Scout incident hike took place on the 23rd March 2002. It was a fourish
mile hike around the edge of Harpenden, which en route were 6 incidents, which
we had to solve either in a limited time or until the trailing group caught up!!
It was a nice walk and (I think!) everyone enjoyed it!
We first got out into patrols, and the first patrol (mine) set off. Our
first collision was found when I, being the map reader for our patrol, went
the wrong way immediately, which led to us having to get a loft to the first
incident.
The first incident was: we had to get a film canister, with some co-ordinates
on, out of a vertical drainage pipe without touching either. As we were near the
river, we decided we had to 'float' it out. Unluckily (or luckily depending on
whose view you look at it), our canister got stuck at the bottom!! We finally
got the co-ordinates and set of for incident 2.
Incident no.2 was common sense. We had to move the bottom slab of a pyramid to
of one stick and to another. But on top of that were three other
decreasing-in-size slabs, AND you could only put slabs on slabs bigger than it.
Confused, then see the diagram below.
In incident 3 we had to find as many natural materials as we could and arrange
them to spell out the name of one of the patrols. We had to do Bulldogs. This
was easy enough!!
Incident 4 was to build a ballista from canes and
elastic bands, and try to get it to throw a beanbag as far as possible. We got
half an hour to complete the whole task (yep, throws an' all!).
Our next stop was the fire station, where we were marked on how we coped with a
certain situation. We had to bring 'Daddy' and the baby downstairs, but 'Daddy'
had broken his leg! Also, there was kind of an assault-course-arranged maze for
us to get ourselves, and more importantly him, through.
The final incident was a fill-in-the-blanks kind of task, with one person having
to cross of co-ordinates as we yelled them at him!! We did total rubbish on this
one.
Now we had all the co-ordinates we needed, and using our (yeah right!!) superior
mapping and my (that's better!!) search skills, we found our prize, Cadburys
cream eggs. "HALF WAY ACROSS HARPENDEN ON A WILD GOOSE CHASE AND THIS IS ALL WE
GET, ONE CREAM EGG EACH!!" I hear you scream!!
Overall, it was a very enjoyable day and I think a long walk did everyone some
good. Afterwards, there were a couple of quizzes back at the hut, and some of us
slept the night there. It really was a lot of fun.
