Summer Camp 2004
In July 2004, the Troop camped at Buddens Camp Site campsite, near Wareham in
Dorset, for 7 nights. Here are some of the daily camp reports written by the
Scouts.
Day 1 (Wednesday)
Today we got on the minibus at 9:00. It was boring. Once we got
to the campsite after a 4 hour journey we had to put up our tent
and mess tent - we took really long, but anyway the campsite is good.
The tea was fantastic and it was the best pastie I had tasted. Later
we played 4-way football which was great fun. We came second because
the leaders scored against us. It was fun. We had supper and then
went to bed.

Day 2 (Thursday)
When we woke up, we started tidying straight away for inspection. Then
when we had done our patrol tent, we had some cereal and started our fire.
The chefs made a good attempt to make bacon, beans and egg but it was
pathetic. At the inspection, we did totally poo, pathetic, rubbish,
whatever you want to call it it was poo.
Then we did camp gadgets and we had to make a wash basin, a wet pit,
a thing to hold up a bowl to our hands in and a washing line. Then we
had lunch. It was not too bad because we didn't make it, but we had to
wash up. Then we did sports competition. Two Scouts from my patrol threw
the cricket ball the furthest. Then we did rifle shooting - I don't know
who won that but it was fun, we got to shoot CDs.
I think this was a good day but the cooking could have been better.
Bulldogs Patrol
Day 3 (Friday)
Today we got up really early to go to Swanage to do climbing. It was
great fun. I went about 5 times. The only thing was that you had to
walk a long and boring walk to get there.
Then we went to Swanage for shopping. After we had fish and chips which
was lovely. Then we went to have fun on the beach. We went in the sea
- it was freezing. Later we played games. We suck at volleyball.

Day 4 (Saturday)
Once again our patrol was the last to eat with my patrol wasting a
lot of time doing nothing. When all our washing was done, we all
headed down to the lake to do rafting. We were split up into two
groups, one with Bulldogs and half of Eagles, and the other group
was my patrol (Panthers) and the other half of Eagles. When the
rafts were finally ready, we set sail. After five minutes, the other
raft had already fallen apart, so we won (even though there was no
race!) When we had put all the ropes away we came back for lunch.
When the PLs had finished eating we headed off shopping for MasterChef,
while everyone else went swimming. We got back to camp and started our
fires straight away. We cooked all our food and then it was tried by
the leaders. For starter we had bacon and cheese salad, for main course
we had sweet and sour chicken, and for pud we had cookies and cream with
peaches and raspberries. It was really good and and everyone liked
everything, and especially the pudding.
Campfire was next on the agenda, but washing up stood in its way.
When it was all done, the campfire got under way. Each patrol had to
sing two songs and do a sketch. Everybody enjoyed all of this we all
went back to supper. Every member of my patrol really enjoyed the day
and most of all MasterChef.
Panthers Patrol
Day 5 (Sunday)
We woke up at 7:50am (10 minutes to get ready!) We got our fires ready not much
later and cooked breakfast. For breakfast we had fried eggs (nice), bubble and
squeak (really nice) and baked beans (absolutely disgusting!).
After breakfast we had the WONDERFUL job of cleaning the toilets! I got a good
job of cleaning the sinks whilst everybody else had to clean the floor, the
showers and WORST of all the TOILETS! At the end all the water that we used was
black (so we must have done something right!)
We than walked down to the archery range to do (surprisingly enough) archery. I
found it a bit boring as I barely hit the target and it wasn't much fun. We
then came back to camp.
When we got there, one of the leaders took us to the woods and showed us how to
put up shelters and a hammock in just 2 minutes! He tought us all of the knots:
1 to tie to a tree, 1 to tie to a tree and tighten it, and 1 to go on the pegs.
We then walked over to the water slide and everybody got soaked and covered in
bubbles from the washing-up liquid being poured down the slide. I didn't go on
the slide as I couldn't be bothered and I really didn't want to get wet.
After, we came back to camp and started our fires whilst some of the others
prepared all the food in the marquee. We had chicken in creamy peppercorn
sauce, roast and boiled potatoes, cabbage and carrots. It all tasted really
nice and I enjoyed it.
The best thing today was dinner as I thoght it was the best so far. The worst
thing was the full kit inspection we had in the morning that I forgot to mention
earlier. I think today was a fairly good day even though it was a bit boring at
times: 8/10.

Day 6 (Monday)
We had to wake up and quickly pack. Then we ate breakfast. Groups A and B
started the hike first, then after approximately 45 minutes groups C and D
followed. The route at first was quite easy as it was mainly roads and wide
flat footpaths. Occasionally we walked through fields. But the second half of
the hike was on a narrow hilly coastal path.
Throughout the hike we saw lots of towers and castles. The hike was eleven
miles and lasted about six hours. After the hike we cooked expedition meals
inside trangias. Then we had an inspection, played rounders and went to bed.

HIKE DAY
I was really looking forward to this day because it meant that we could escape from the campsite!!
Firstly we woke up at 8 o'clock and did flag break, then one of the leaders told
us what to pack in our bags for the hike, as we wanted to set off early. The
leaders cooked our breakfast, egg and bacon sandwich, but we still had to wash
up (eeerrr). After the meal we were put into our hiking groups. The seniors
went off first closely followed, by 30 minutes, by the juniors. I was in group
C. Once we arrived in the minibus at the selected point, we set off along a
road then down a track until we reached a viewpoint. We set off along another
track parallel to the sea. Once we reached some crossroads, we headed towards
the sea and had lunch in a car park next to the sea.
After lunch we set off along the South Dorset coast walk, which was very easy to
navigate as there was no way off it. Once we went up an extremely high hill, we
turned off it and headed back to the area in whch the minibus was parked and
went back to camp.
Once we were back we started cooking the evening meal (pasta and sauce)
expedition style by using trangias. After the meal we played a game of rounders
in the dark and I got run over by one of the leaders! Afterwards it was bed
(finally!).
Panthers Patrol
Day 7 (Tuesday)
We woke up about 8 in the morning and gathered round the flag. We made our fire
and cooked our breakfast. We then had an inspection which the leaders said was
poor - they said we had a lake at the bottom of our billy. We then did patrol
challenges and they were all boring apart from the bulldogs downing [water!]
competition, where one of the PLs was sick.
When we had finished that, we started to take down our mess tent. I blew the
leaders air horn without asking, so they tried to get me in the pool. All the
young leaders caught me and threw me in the pool, then soaked everyone, so they
grabbed me and staked me out which hurt a bit. In the afternoon we played
sports and in the night we played a wide game which was ok but a bit boring.
